Kepala Batas: A Corporal ranked policeman was seriously injured after being dragged for almost 20 meters before falling into a drain while chasing a man in an incident in Penaga, here, early yesterday morning.
In the incident at about 1 am, when several policemen were patrolling the area as required by Covid-19 Task Force Op. They saw a suspicious man riding a motorcycle.
Seberang Perai Utara District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Noorzainy Mohd Noor said, members then introduced themselves and instructed the man to stop his motorcycle at the side of the road to enable the inspection to be done.
"However, the man continued to accelerate and sped off on his motorcycle dangerously, forcing the policemen involved to chase him.
"When they arrived at a junction, the suspect's motorcycle collided with the motorcycle of the 30-year-old policeman who was on the right of the suspect causing him to be dragged almost 20 meters before falling into a drain," he said in a statement, here, today.
He said the suspect managed to escape after the policeman fell but he was arrested nearby.
“They checked the suspect who’s in his 20s and did not find any illegal or dangerous items. He is believed to have fled the police as he did not have a driver’s license.
"A urine screening test done on the suspect came back negative for drugs," he said.
Meanwhile, Noorzainy said the injured policeman was taken to Kepala Batas Hospital (HKB) for further treatment.
"The policeman was found to have suffered serious injuries. He broke his right shoulder and injured his body while the suspect also suffered scratches on his body," he said.
The case is being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a civil servant.
