In the wake of the Israel-Palestine conflict sparking a wave of boycotts in Malaysia, with McDonald's at the forefront of the impact, local seasoned actor Azhar Sulaiman has taken a different stance. He has chosen to patronize and vocally support McDonald's employees, urging everyone to remain rational as these workers are also victims.
Azhar Sulaiman took to Facebook to share his actions in supporting McDonald's employees, emphasizing the need for rationality amidst the collective boycott. In a post yesterday, he recounted a conversation with his child while dining at the McDonald's in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI).
His child asked whether they should take the food to go or dine in, to which he replied, "We'll dine in." The child, puzzled, questioned the seriousness of his response. Azhar reassured that McDonald's wouldn't close, and once the conflict in Israel and Palestine subsides, he believes Malaysians will return to patronize the fast-food chain.
The child then noted, "Dad, I think some Malay people across the street are watching us," to which Azhar responded, "It's nothing. How do you think the Muslim staff wearing headscarves here feel when they see us? We're here to support them."
Ultimately, the child agreed that McDonald's employees are indirect victims of the current situation.
Amidst the widespread boycott of products associated with Israel or the Jewish community, both local McDonald's and Starbucks in Malaysia have become unintended victims. Despite previous denials by Malaysia's McDonald's regarding franchise fees contributing to oppressing Palestinians, the public boycott persists.
Azhar Sulaiman's supportive actions have faced criticism, leading to the eventual deletion of his post.
