A local man is counting his blessings after surviving a terrifying accident in Melaka yesterday morning (Sept 11), when the car he was driving plunged off a flyover. The 52-year-old man not only lived through the ordeal but escaped with only minor injuries to his body and right leg.
According to Central Melaka District police chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, the incident occurred at around 5 am as the man was driving from the city center towards Limbongan. Preliminary investigations suggest that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing his Perodua Myvi to veer off course and crash into the road barrier. The vehicle then plummeted approximately 30 meters from the Syed Abdul Aziz flyover.
According to Harian Metro, he suffered injuries to his body and right leg and was taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment, said Patit, adding that the police are now searching for witnesses to aid in their investigation. The case is being probed under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (Rule 10 LN 166/59), which deals with reckless driving.
The Melaka Tengah Fire and Rescue Station was alerted to the accident shortly after it occurred, receiving a distress call at 5.09 am. Senior Fire Officer Abd Rahim Ismail reported that a team of eight firefighters, including three from the Emergency Medical Services Team, along with a fire truck, were dispatched to the scene and arrived within minutes at 5.16 am.
Upon their arrival, the firefighters rescued the injured driver and handed him over to medical personnel for further treatment. The swift response ensured that the victim was safely extricated from the wreckage. Further details about the investigation and the driver's condition are expected to follow as police continue to gather information.
