Last night, a woman broadcasted live on her Facebook the moment a group of plain-clothed policemen came knocking on her door at a high-end condominium in Jalan Logan, Georgetown, Penang, requesting for a house search.
In the live video, a group of men can be seen persuading the woman to conduct a house search, which she persistently refused. The woman can be heard defending herself saying, "You could be a fake police officer," and demanded to see proof. One of the men in the police neon vest proceeded to show her his ID card but the woman wasn't convinced.
Cut to a few moments later, two men in complete police uniform arrived at the scene, explaining to the woman that they were indeed real police officers. At this point, another man, presumably her husband, emerged from the house, with his phone in his ears, talking to their lawyer. The couple then repeatedly demanded a warrant from the group of men waiting outside, or else they won't be granted entry. One of the men came forward to the door with a steel bolt cutter, yet retreated after a while, not wanting to incite violence.
After more than an hour long live broadcast, the woman finally gave in and made ways to the police. In the comments section, fellow Malaysians were not shy to express their opinions on the matter.
Some were giving legal advice:
Some were defending the woman:
While others took a stand with the police:
The question is, can the Malaysian police enter your house without a warrant?
Well, the short answer is, yes. But only under these conditions:
• When it needs to be fast, like for countering terrorism
• Searching for stolen items (the police must have a written list of the allegedly stolen items and must be accompanied by the victim of the theft)
