Are we really surprised though that the US government has now classified our infamous Petaling Street as one of the notorious marketplaces for fake goods? It has been ongoing for a long time!
However, the report that the United States Trade Representative (USTR) recently published condemned local authorities for failing to take the initiative to carry out enforcement operations.
The market has a reputation for being a location where locals and foreigners go to buy fake goods such as watches, purses, wallets, sunglasses, and other consumer goods.
In response, the Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders Association asserted that the report was inaccurate and that it was exaggerated as only 10% to 20% of vendors in the market actually sell fake goods.
Apart from that, the report also features a list of 18 countries, including China, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines, with a total of 33 physical markets and 39 online markets. E-commerce platforms including WeChat, Shopee, and Taobao are also on the list based on their online market's results.
How do you feel about this, Malaysians?
