In a harrowing account, a woman has sought a divorce after her husband, influenced by an old school friend, became deeply involved in a dangerous cult. The cult's teachings, led by a self-proclaimed 'guru', pushed the man to abandon his responsibilities, leaving his wife and their 8-year-old daughter in a cycle of abuse, forced labor, and spiritual manipulation.
According to the woman, the situation began when her husband suddenly stopped practicing his daily prayers, claiming that his 'guru' had elevated him to a special status. He told her that he no longer needed to perform the traditional acts of worship, as his pure intention alone sufficed. The cult leader convinced him that through spiritual guidance, he could achieve a direct path to heaven without adhering to Islamic practices.
The situation took a darker turn when her husband made shocking demands. He ordered his wife and their daughter to sleep with the guru, claiming that this act would erase their sins and guarantee their entry into heaven. Horrified and unwilling to comply, the woman refused. In response, both she and her daughter were punished severely. They were locked in a dark room, chained, and forced to memorize a special prayer asking for the guru's forgiveness.
For three long years, her husband refused to work, claiming that his architecture job was irrelevant to the afterlife promised by the guru. His obsession with the cult's beliefs drove him to rely solely on spiritual practices, neglecting his family's basic needs. He forced his wife and daughter to beg for money at night markets, demanding that the earnings be handed over to his guru. If they didn't collect enough money, the woman would face physical abuse at his hands.
The abuse only ended when welfare authorities intervened, discovering the woman while she was begging at a night market. They rescued her and her daughter from the dire situation, giving them a chance to escape the nightmare they had been living for years.
Now living with her uncle, the woman is undergoing spiritual rehabilitation and seeking a divorce for the safety of her child. She shared her ordeal with legal expert Puan Hazwani Zainal, who advised her to file for fasakh (annulment) on the grounds of abuse, coercion, and psychological harm.
Puan Hazwani also emphasized the importance of psychological support for both the woman and her daughter. After suffering such prolonged trauma and manipulation, they require professional help to heal from the emotional scars left by the cult's influence. The woman hopes that by seeking legal recourse and speaking out, she can protect her daughter and begin rebuilding their lives free from the toxic influence of the cult.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by manipulative cults and the importance of legal and psychological intervention in cases of domestic abuse and spiritual exploitation.
