A 22-year-old woman, Siti Nabila, was fined RM2,000 by the magistrates court for abandoning her newborn baby boy. The infant, just one day old and still with the umbilical cord attached, was found behind an unnumbered house.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Amal Razin Alias, sentenced Siti Nabila after she pleaded guilty to the charge. Along with the fine, she was ordered to serve a four-month prison sentence if she failed to make the payment.
According to Bernama, the incident occurred on September 7, at approximately 6 pm, when Siti Nabila abandoned the baby behind a house. The charge, under Section 317 of the Penal Code, relates to the concealment of a birth with the intent to abandon the child. The law provides for a maximum penalty of seven years in prison, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The prosecution was led by Deputy Public Prosecutor Siti Aisya Nailah Harizan. Siti Nabila, however, was not represented by legal counsel during the proceedings.
