The Bintulu Info Facebook page shared a photo that caught everyone's attention recently.
It featured two Russian "backpackers" standing by the roadside in Bintulu, Sarawak, holding up a cardboard sign that read, "We are Russian travellers travelling around the world without money. Please support our travels. Thanks."
The admin of the Facebook page wasted no time in expressing their disapproval of tourists resorting to begging for money from locals to support their trips. The caption written was pretty straightforward: "If you don't have money, please don't travel. Go work instead."
This sentiment struck a chord with many netizens who were quick to criticize the backpackers, particularly those hailing from Western countries. Local Malaysians joined the conversation, emphasizing the importance of financial responsibility and planning before embarking on a journey.
Some even went as far as tagging the Royal Malaysian Police, the Malaysian Immigration Department, and the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Malaysia, hoping that appropriate action would be taken against the travellers.
They hoped that appropriate action would be taken against the backpackers. At present, it remains uncertain whether the two Russian individuals are still in Sarawak, and the local authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the incident.
