In a recent statement, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor conveyed his deep regret regarding the remarks made by the President of the Islamic Party of Malaysia (PAS), Abdul Hadi Awang, which included a "warning" directed at religious scholars, lawyers, judges, representatives of the people, and even the Malay Rulers.
The Selangor Royal Office, through a Facebook post, informed that a letter expressing the Sultan's sentiments had been dispatched to Hadi through the PAS Commissioner for Selangor, Ab Halim Tamuri.
The contents of the letter, shared on Facebook, saw the Sultan describing Hadi's comments as not thoroughly understanding and delving into the Sultan's speech during the National Council for Islamic Affairs (MKI) meeting on February 15.
The Sultan expressed that Hadi's cynical statement indirectly linked the Sultan's speech to the Malay Rulers' need for a spiritual perspective, rather than pursuing worldly interests alone. The Sultan stated that Hadi's remarks were not only misleading but also culturally inappropriate, as they lacked the customary respect and decorum expected when expressing views and advice to the Malay Rulers.
The Sultan emphasized that Hadi's statement could not only cause confusion but also potentially lead to unrest, eventually jeopardizing the unity of the Muslim community, especially among Malays in the country.
In Hadi's message titled "Ketinggian Islam wajib dipertahankan" (The Height of Islam Must Be Defended), he reminded followers to preserve and defend their faith. However, the Sultan questioned why Hadi was now challenging the position of the Federal Constitution as the supreme law of the land. The Sultan pointed out that Islam had been established as the religion of the Federation since the constitution's inception in 1957.
The Sultan advised Hadi to exercise caution in the future to avoid repeating actions that may insult the Malay Rulers through his statements, potentially causing divisions within the Muslim community. The Sultan also directed politicians and leaders not to exploit Islam for political gain, safeguarding the purity of the religion from political interests.
Previously, Sultan Sharafuddin, also the chairman of the National Council for Islamic Affairs (MKI), urged all parties to remain calm and respect the court's decisions and the Federal Constitution following the Federal Court's ruling that annulled 16 provisions of the Kelantan Sharia Criminal Offences Enactment.
This development highlights tensions arising from Hadi Awang's comments, with the Sultan emphasizing the need for respect, caution, and unity in addressing religious and constitutional matters within the nation.
