In Kelantan, two disabled workers, Che Mohd Fadil Che Abdul Rahman, 42, and Muhammad Fahmi Amran, 26, have shared their personal experiences of working in the food service industry. Despite the challenges posed by their disabilities, they have persevered, demonstrating resilience and dedication in their respective roles.
Che Mohd Fadil, who has a cognitive disability, has been working at a food establishment along Jalan Dusun Muda for the past eight years. His journey has been anything but easy. Due to misunderstandings while taking orders, he has been subjected to verbal abuse and even physical attacks from customers. To address this issue, Che Mohd Fadil now wears a name tag that reads "Sorry, I'm Disabled (OKU)," which serves as a gentle reminder to customers about his condition. This small gesture has significantly reduced complaints, yet he still faces challenging situations, particularly when orders become complex.
Before joining the food industry, Che Mohd Fadil worked as a security guard but lost his job when his contract ended. His current employer, Wan Marnizena Najib, acknowledges his hard work and dedication, though she admits he sometimes struggles in high-pressure environments. Initially hired as a dishwasher, Che Mohd Fadil was later given the opportunity to take orders despite occasional mistakes and mood swings. His progress is a testament to his perseverance and his employer's belief in his potential.
On the other hand, Muhammad Fahmi Amran, a physically disabled worker, has been employed at a food establishment in Kubang Kerian for four years. Standing at 110 centimeters tall, Fahmi often surprises customers who mistake him for a child. However, this initial misconception fades quickly as they witness his efficiency in taking orders and preparing drinks. Fahmi earns a daily wage of RM60 to RM70, a reflection of his skill and dedication.
As the youngest of five siblings, Fahmi initially feared he might struggle to find employment. However, his fortunes changed when he was hired by the restaurant. On his first day, curious customers inquired about his age and offered him moral support upon learning he was an adult. Fahmis's confidence and positive outlook have allowed him to excel in his role, and he is treated equally by his colleagues.
The experiences of Che Mohd Fadil and Muhammad Fahmi highlight both the challenges and triumphs faced by disabled workers in the food service industry. Their stories serve as an inspiration, reminding us of the importance of inclusivity and understanding in the workplace. Despite the obstacles, they continue to work diligently, proving that with the right support and opportunities, individuals with disabilities can thrive in any environment.
