Aside from our smartphones, our computer is probably the next most important thing in our lives. When it comes to work and study, many people still prefer the bigger screen and the ease of input through a mouse and keyboard.
With many people staying at home and using their PCs more often, many people are starting to realize their computers not performing as well as it used to be. If you're one of them, there might just be some things you can do. These 4 tips are beginner friendly and super easy to get done!
1. Keep A Tidy Desk...top
Whenever you start your computer, it needs to load all the icons on your desktop before they show you everything properly. With that said, the more things are on your desktop, the more things it needs to load, the longer it takes. So, the best way to have a quick startup is to have lesser desktop items by organizing them or just stick to the Windows Search function to opening programs.
What to do: Organize / delete desktop shortcuts for a cleaner desktop.
2. Remove Unnecessary Programs
If you don't do this often, I can guarantee you there is AT LEAST 1 program or application that you haven't use in the past year. Not only does unused software take up your storage space, they might also have processes running in the background (yes, even without you opening them up) that takes up your precious computer resources. To uninstall, search for the Control Panel, choose "Programs and Features", then scroll through to see which programs are not needed.
What to do: Uninstall programs not used for a long time in Control Panel.
3. Keep It Cool
A basic rule about electricity is that devices get hot, and the hotter something gets, the worse it'll function. This is because having heat means enregy being loss to the surrounding. Furthermore, the fans have to run on full speed to try to cool the computer, taking up even more power.
Laptops are more prone to heating, especially if you run multiple programs. So, if you want to let your laptop run for years without a hitch, keep it cool by closing "heavy" programs and letting it rest every now and then.
What to do: Close inactive programs, let computer rest, and don't block the fans.
4. Shut It Down
It might seem simple, but many people actually don't shut down their computers. They leave it to "sleep" until the next day and get back to work. Shutting your computer down will actually give it a quick "refresh" and allow it to install much needed updates (yes, we know it's annoying, but it keeps your computer safe). So, the next time you are going to sleep, don't just let your computer "sleep" too, shut it down!
What to do: Shut down your computer every now and then.
So, these 4 tips don't require any advance computer knowledge but is enough to help your computer perform better. Be sure to try them out the next time you open up your PC and see if there are any improvements!
