A teenage girl in Indonesia, 16, was allegedly killed by her brothers because she was accused of having sex before marriage. The two brothers, aged 20 and 30, have been arrested and could face death penalty if convicted.
According to Sin Chew Daily, the incident occurred on Saturday (May 9) in Sulawesi island's Bantaeng regency. The two suspects admitted that they attacked their sister with a log and a machete because she had sex before she was married.
They said they felt ashamed by their sister’s confession of her premarital sex with a distant relative, who was then held hostage by the family for refusing to marry her, said local police chief Wawan Sumantri.
He added that the police have detained seven other members of the family.They will be protected from the outraged local residents.

Honor killing, also known as shame killing is the killing of a victim (often women) by a member of a family when she is believed to have behaved inappropriately and brought shame or dishonor upon the family.
It is understood that though honor killing is a culture in some areas in South East Asia, it is not common in Indonesia.
