Following the viral over-priced food at a floating restaurant in Langkawi, netizens have shared their two-cents all over social media.
While the issue is under KPDNHEP's investigation, let's learn some tips from a local when it comes to ordering seafood. Here are some tips shared by a Facebook user, Tai Zee Kin.
1. Eat at seafood restaurants with fresh fish tanks on the sides. Here's where you get to pick out the freshest seafood. Don't try to eat at undersea galleries or underwater exhibitions, where you'll have to pay an entrance fee.
1.5. Bonus: If you have little kids with you, you can even take them for a stroll by the tanks & teach them about the various sea creatures.
2. Right at the left or right corner of the tanks, you'll find the name and species of the sea creatures. These are clearly stated, together with prices per 100g, 1 kg, or the corresponding weights.
3. You'll find a scale by the tanks. You may ask for the restaurant owner to weigh before placing your order, or request for a weight estimate.
4. If there are no tanks on display in the restaurants, you could order the seafood by weight (not using the actual price). For example, if you're ordering seabass, let them know you would like 1.5kg. The owner will proceed to check if the requested amount is available. If there isn't, the owner will provide an estimated amount range.
5. Seafood lovers would be able to compute the price of the seafood with the estimated weight in their heads.
According to Tai, the Chinese dislike dining before knowing the price of their meals. So, it's best if people learn the price of the meal before placing an order.
