In Nabawan, Sabah, a shocking incident unfolded when a 31-year-old man confessed to damaging an automated teller machine (ATM) at a bank located in the Tekun Jaya building.
The incident came to light when a security guard noticed the smashed screen early in the morning around 8 a.m., according to a report from the New Straits Times. Upon discovering the damage, the security guard promptly informed a 42-year-old bank officer, who then lodged a police report.
Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai, District Police Chief, provided details about the case. He revealed that the intoxicated suspect voluntarily surrendered at the district police headquarters and gave a statement two days after the incident. During questioning, the man admitted to striking the screen with his hand, which matched the injuries visible on him.
"The suspect has expressed willingness to cover the cost of repairs for the damaged ATM," said Superintendent Yampil. However, the exact cost of the repairs will only be determined once the bank reopens on Monday.
Police investigations have also confirmed that the suspect has no prior criminal record.
