Feeling overwhelmed by the variety of foundation before you? Don't know which of these foundations suit you?
Foundation is like a second skin, apply the right one and you'll look great but if you chose the wrong foundation, uh-oh (I'll leave it to your wild imagination).
So, before you delve into the world of foundation, follow these advices to make the right choice!
1. KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE
Knowing your skin type helps you to decide which finishes suit you. If you have a normal to dry skin then a dewy finish is your go to. Likewise, matte foundation works better on oily to combination skin types. If you apply a matte finish on normal skin, it'll make your skin look oiler and you don't want to have an oily look (honey, that's not in season!).
2. FIND THE SHADE THAT SUITS YOU
Now we've overcome the first barrier, on to the tricky part - the right shade. This is easier said than done. Swatching foundations on your forearm, your hands - NO! Find a spot on your face to swatch as this is where you're applying your foundation on, not your forearms!
A pro tip that you can try, is to apply a dab of the foundation on the centre of your face, then, blend it outwards, towards the hairline so that you match the sides of your cheek and down the middle of the neck (YES, you blend the foundation down to the middle of your neck). It's essential to also test the foundation in good natural lighting.
3. SKIN UNDERTONES
When choosing a foundation, don't forget your skin undertones. If you've a warm complexion, go with a shade that has yellow undertones (foundation should look subtly yellow/golden in the bottle). Whereas if you have a cool complexion, find a shade which has pink undertones (also subtle pink).
Choosing a shade that fits your undertone is quite important because you don't want to end up looking too pink, yellow or too ashen.
4. COVERAGE
So, bear in mind the coverage level you want while looking for a foundation. If you're uncertain about full coverage, always choose a sheer foundation. It is light to medium coverage and most importantly, buildable.
On the other hand, you may opt for a full coverage if you have skin discolouration or acne.
It's your decision to make.
5. A LITTLE HELP PLEASE
We've been through these steps and if you're still uncertain about this particular foundation, ask for professional assistance. You may also ask for a sample to see if you like the shade and if it suits you in the long run.
Now you have it, beginner's guide in choosing the correct foundation.
Don't rush the process of choosing the right foundation, as mention before, foundation IS your second skin.
Good luck in getting the right one!
