Sensitive skin has to be the most difficult of skin types to be blessed with. You are never really sure when it acts up, what product could cause flare-ups and might notice redness, peeling, itching, burning and tightness occasionally which can happen due to various factors.
However, it doesn't mean it will always stay that way.
Dr Deepthi Atmakuri, consultant dermatologist and founder of Clinica Derm to lay down some most common skincare mistakes that men with sensitive skin make.
She says, Most people with sensitive skin tend to be very picky and hesitant to use any products or they overdo it. However, in reality, they should get the right diagnosis and a treatment plan and avoid some things.
Here are five things she recommends staying away from doing to make sure you don't anger your sensitive skin:
1. Think Twice Before DIY-ing
Trying things by learning from social media or unprofessional suggestions, using essential oils and home remedies and going overboard with organic stuff are a few common mistakes.
It's hazardous to try these on sensitive skin and it can also trigger further skin issues.
2. Not Applying Moisturiser
Repairing the skin barrier is the primary goal you must focus on. Apply moisturiser 2-3 times a day. It should be the first contact with the skin.
Get the right product with professional help, and choose products which have ceramides, hyaluronic acid and oatmeal extracts. Stick to the regime and in a week or so the barrier starts to recover and the skin heals.
3. Makeup or Layering Products
Makeup is not just for women and there are many men who use it now, maybe not too frequently, but not removing it before sleep and choosing thicker formulations is a no-no.
Also, layering too many products, including prescribed cosmetics is something which needs caution. Using hair dye or colourants also aggravates the itching and dryness.
4. Ditch The Toner
Toners are not the best things you can put on sensitive skin. They can, in fact, trigger your skin more. Wash your face two to three times a day with a gentle cleanser and jump to moisturiser within three minutes post-cleansing. Use an alcohol-free toner if you must.
5. Over exfoliation
Home-based scrubs or chemical peels are usually not advised for sensitive skin. People who already have skin barrier damage further compromise it by exfoliating. Instead, go for medi facials and lasers which help in building the barrier and in correcting other issues of the skin.
It cant be stressed enough that irrespective of sensitive skin or not, skin is the reflection of your internal health and it must be dealt with care.
Follow a healthy diet and lifestyle, hydrate yourself, choose the right products and do not shy away from seeking professional help for your regular skincare regime.
