Following the Penang Kopitiam shaming customers for not paying extra after not ordering beverages incident, many suggested that this is not right and that legal action should be taken against the Kopitiam owner. However, a local legal practitioner says otherwise.
According to Sin Chew Daily, attorney Lim said it is actually legal for the owner to charge customers for not ordering beverages.
He explained that a kopitiam is considered private property, and the owner can request specific fees from the guests.
For example, when you enter a private parking space, you are bound to pay the parking fees.
These unwritten rules of extra charges will not be bothered if it is reported to the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) as long as it not related to the price of products, like charging RM1 for Air Suam.
As a word of advice, just order Air Suam next time even if you don't want to order any drinks in kopitiam, and maybe if they charge you extra for it, you can sue them for that then. LOLx
