Dato' Ho Fong Lee recently experienced the harsh reality of falling victim to an online scam, losing nearly RM100,000 in the process. It all started with a seemingly innocent click on a Facebook ad offering maid services.
Little did he know that this simple action would lead to such devastating consequences. Despite his efforts to stop the scammers, they managed to empty his account, leaving him only RM7,200.
As the chairman of the Malaysia-China Ho Chamber of Global Commerce, Dato' Ho expressed his surprise and frustration at the malicious nature of the Facebook advertisement.
He emphasized that he had no intention of hiring a maid and had clicked on the ad out of curiosity. He believes there must be a security loophole in Facebook's advertising system that allows such false advertisements to circulate.

Adding to his disappointment, Dato' Ho criticized the bank for handling the situation. He claimed that the scammers swiftly withdrew a significant amount of money from his account within half an hour, despite having a daily limit set on his account.
He also stated that he did not receive any notifications about the transactions and immediately contacted the bank once he discovered the fraud. However, the bank's response was reportedly slow, allowing the scammers to make off with the remaining funds.
Feeling helpless and angry, Dato' Ho Fong Lee emphasized that this should not happen to banks.
He acknowledged his own mistake in clicking on the link but highlighted the loopholes in the bank's security system, stating that they cannot guarantee the absolute safety of people's deposits.
Regrettably, Dato' Ho does not hold much hope of recovering the lost RM100,000.
