Is this costly hospital bill justifiable?
For Mark O'Dell, a recent surgery and hospital stay had costed him a whopping RM18,837.55!
O’Dell, who serves as the CEO of Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM), was baffled upon reading the 13-page billing statement.
He had undergone an arthroscopic surgery to treat hernia at a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, and recuperated for just a single night there.

The bill, however, baffled him due to the miscellaneous charges which included:
- RM3,189, consignment supplies
- RM3,850.30, equipment and instrumentation
- RM27.70, nursing procedures
The rest of the breakdown listed medical and surgical supplies, medication, nursing care, operating theatre, room and board, and doctors' fees.
As if the list wasn’t shocking enough, the surprised O’Dell found out he was also being charged for ear probe cover and three disposable underpads, which costed RM6.30 and RM32.70 respectively.
