For over 60 years, a 91-year-old man has been selling durians by the roadside, demonstrating unwavering dedication to his trade. Despite relying on a wheelchair for mobility, he persists in his work, enduring long hours and even adverse weather conditions, with his eldest daughter ferrying him to and from his stall daily.
He initially started selling fruits in the vicinity of Albert Street before obtaining a street hawker license as per government regulations. He has since been stationed between Short Street and Albert Street, expertly handling durians for customers while his assistant assists with transactions.
His eldest daughter revealed that her father begins his day around 11 a.m. and wraps up at 10 p.m., barring severe rain during the monsoon season. Despite his age, he remains active, aided by an electric bicycle for short distances, while his daughter assists with longer journeys due to his high blood pressure, necessitating regular medication.
His friendly demeanour and adeptness at his craft have earned him the admiration of regular customers who frequently purchase durians from him for both their quality and the customer's desire to support his continued endeavour despite his advanced age.
Emulating her father's work ethic, his daughter who retired at 52, now helps out at the stall alongside her brother. She believes that her father's work not only keeps him engaged but also contributes to his overall well-being, a sentiment echoed by many supportive patrons who have come to admire the resilience and spirit of the elderly fruit vendor.
