In celebration of Deepavali, Malaysia's Ministry of Works has announced a toll-free travel period on major highways across the country. The exemption, which applies only to private vehicles, will last from 12:01 am on October 29 until 11:59 pm on October 30. The government anticipates this initiative will cost around RM38 million, a move that Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi says is part of the unity government's efforts to support Malaysians by reducing living expenses and fostering a spirit of inclusivity and cultural celebration.
According to FMT, the toll exemption, however, will not apply to toll plazas at Malaysia borders, such as the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tanjung Kupang in Johor, as it is focused on domestic travel. According to Minister Nanta Linggi, this initiative is designed to reduce travel costs, ease congestion, and allow families to gather for Deepavali with greater ease and affordability.
"This initiative is in line with the unity government aspirations to help reduce the cost of living of Malaysians while bolstering cultural unity among our nation's multiethnic society," said the minister. He also encouraged road users to plan their trips in advance and heed advisories from highway authorities to ensure smooth and safe journeys.
As traffic is expected to increase significantly during this holiday period, the Ministry of Works advises all travelers to check for traffic updates and follow recommended travel times to avoid peak-hour congestion. With many Malaysians expected to take to the roads for Deepavali, the toll-free initiative provides a boost to families across the country, helping them celebrate this festive occasion with loved ones while reducing travel expenses.
