A video of a still-new Proton sports utility vehicle allegedly catching fire at a vehicle inspection centre has made rounds on social media. In the video clip shared by @NanManjoi8715 on X, the Proton X70, still clad in its plastic seat covers and trade plates, was seen engulfed in smoke.
Several people were also seen with extinguishers, opening the vehicle's door in an attempt to put out the fire. It was believed that the incident happened at Puspakom Alor Gajah.

Social media users also had taken to the comments section of the post, expressing their concerns as well as sharing their opinions on the reason the car caught fire.
X user @Orkid_Hutan_ offered her opinion, saying that it was maybe the car's battery being the cause for the fire. "(It must be) a battery or a battery terminal problem. (I think) this is not the first (time) that it happenedbecause I may have seen on the news that it happened before."
Another user, @edthehairfairy said: "Look, I like Proton's latest car designs, but there are too many issues with their cars."
Previously, a video had circulated on social media depicting another vehicle model from the national car maker, the X90 catching fire. The car maker later traced the cause of the fire to a grounding connection to the vehicle's body was the primary cause of concern after conducting a comprehensive investigation.
"An issue has been identified regarding the grounding connection to the body of the vehicle. This can cause overheating in the connecting area when a continuous large current passes through it and can result in a thermal incident due to its proximity to the soundproofing material, said the statement from Proton.
"As a safety measure, all Proton X90 owners will be contacted individually by Proton dealers to bring their vehicles for inspection and if required, remedial action will be taken by the service centre to eliminate any thermal risk," it said in a statement.
