A 52-year-old unemployed father of three has pleaded not guilty to allegations of deliberately injuring his left eye to secure a RM1 million insurance claim. The accused, Tan Kok Guan, entered his plea before Magistrate Siti Zulaikha Nordin@Ghani at the Magistrates Court earlier today (December 30).
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Tan, who is a registered person with a disability (OKU), faces multiple charges, including attempting to file a fraudulent accident insurance claim and deceiving an insurance company. He allegedly induced the company to transfer RM4,153.57 into his bank account under false pretenses.
The offences were reportedly committed between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on June 8, 2023, in Kampung Paya, Butterworth.
Tans lawyer appealed for a minimal bail amount, citing his dire financial and health conditions. "My client is 52 years old and has not worked since 2023. He is blind in his left eye and suffers from chronic illnesses, including heart disease and stroke," the lawyer stated.
She further highlighted that Tans wife is the sole breadwinner of the family and bears all household expenses. "My client has cooperated fully during the investigation process. Given these circumstances, I humbly request the court to set the lowest possible bail."
