Malaysian police have arrested two men in order to assist in the investigation into the riot incident that took place in front of a restaurant at Station 18 in Ipoh, Perak, of which the videos have since gone viral on social media.
According to the Perak police chief Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid, the police department was notified of a social media post related to the riot, and that a police report on the incident was consequently lodged at 11.51 PM yesterday.
"Our investigation found that the riot sparked when the victim was accused of stealing a mobile phone, causing him to be chased by a group of motorcyclists. At some point, the victim, who was driving a Perodua Bezza, collided with another vehicle and the riot grew," Datuk Mior explained. "The victim's vehicle was damaged using plastic seats and cones as well as stones."
Datuk Mior also added that the cause of the incident was due to a misunderstanding since the accusation against the victim couldn't be proven. According to him, based on the investigation, the cause of the incident was a misunderstanding and theft of a mobile phone by the victim which could not be proven.
"Following the incident, we have detained two men aged 23 and 27 who are suspected to be involved in the riot, to assist in the investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 427 of the Penal Code for treason," Datuk Muir concluded.
