As Marvel moved into their 4th phase last year, we were given amazing shows like Wandavision and Loki, which are both critically acclaimed shows that were a huge success. Thye made us cry, scream, shout and of course laugh but most of all they made us want more!
Since we asked for more, we got more. It was only in 2013 when Marvel decided to break down stereotypes by reimagining the comic book character of Ms Marvel initially a blonde superpowered military hero as a Muslim Pakistani-American teenager named Kamala Khan.
The plot of the series is mostly centred around the origin story of Kamala Khan, a challenged teenager living in New Jersey. Some of the challenges she faces are struggling to reconcile her Muslim Pakistani ancestors' strict customs and ethics with the American environment she lives in, while also coming to terms with her new set of abilities.
The first episode definitely catches our attention in the first few minutes itself as Kamala does something that every Muslim can relate to. She places the key in the ignition, turns it, whispers to herself "Bismillah" and exhales deeply. She was taking her driving test and just like many Muslims in Malaysia, we all say "Bismillah" when doing something challenging while hoping for the best.
Besides "Bismillah" many other Muslim phrases were thrown around throughout the series like "assalamu alaikum" (peace be onto you) and "astaghfirullah" (I seek forgiveness in God) which makes the series more relatable especially to Malaysian audiences since our country's main religion is Muslim. This is a good thing because Muslims are hardly represented on television.
As we know, in most tv shows or movies, Muslims are often vilified or just not represented. The new change of scenery that is taking place in the film world for Muslims is a brand new, fresh and positive change that will definitely help challenge stereotypes and stigmas that exist within society.
In Ms Marvel, yes, we get that normal coming-of-age teenage drama but most importantly we get to see a young and ambitious Muslim female superhero who shatters stereotypes and it also shows Muslim children a superhero who shares their background and religious belief is a superhero which is inspirational in its own way.
