After a massive continuous downfall of rain this morning, multiple areas within Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah were hit by severe flash floods, leaving residents scrambling to safety.
Village elder of Kampung Ramuan China Besar, Khairul Anwar Mansol, stated that the rain, which began at 5am, caused their houses in Taman Bandar Baharu, Masjid Tanah, to be submerged in high waist waters by 10am.
"My wife and I, along with our three children, aged 8 to 14, are taking shelter at a shop near our home."
Speaking to Bernama here today, Khairul went on to state that this was the first time a flash flood had hit the housing area, which has an occupation of over 300 families.
Muammad Nabil Irfan Ibrahim, a 22 year-old cattle breeder, breathed a sigh of relief when he was still able to release almost 20 of his cows from a shed in Kampung Ramuan China Besar, as the waters began to rise around noon, after the rain had started at 7am.
"I had to brave chest high waters to release my cows, and thankfully none died. This is the third time my place has been hit by floods, but water has receded this afternoon" he said.
A spokesperson for the Melaka Civil Defence force stated that the floods had hit the areas of Kampung Paya Lebar, Ramuan China Besar, Taman Masjid Tanah Ria and Durian Daun and assured the public that they were currently in the process of evacuating all the victims to two temporary relief centres situated at Balai Raya Paya Lebar and Balai Raya Seri Tanjung.
