Officers from the Melaka branch of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) recently took to TikTok to expose a local store owner for multiple violations in how they store and label fresh produce. The video, which has since gone viral, highlights both serious health concerns and comical spelling mistakes that caught the attention of the authorities.
@kpdnmelaka Kebersihan kan separuh dari iman?. Kenapa barangan nak dijual simpan dalam toilet?. Patuh lah undang-undang. #kpdnkita #kpdn #kpdnmelaka original sound - KPDN Melaka
At the beginning of the clip, the officers pointed out that the stores labeling of certain items was highly confusing and inaccurate. Common vegetables were misspelled to the point of being unrecognizable.
"How can you spell Lobak Putih (radish) as Lobag Puthe? And what is Bandi (okra)? What about Lemau (lime)?" one officer questioned, clearly frustrated by the poor labeling. "You cant just write these however you like. It needs to be clear for the public to understand."
But while the spelling errors provided some comic relief, the officers soon uncovered a far more concerning issue with the stores hygiene practices. The store owners improper storage of food, particularly vegetables, raised alarm.
"You come to me in religious attire, yet as a Muslim, you fail to maintain basic cleanliness," an officer remarked. "How could you store vegetables in the toilet, even if its not in use for its intended purpose? And to make matters worse, you're selling expired food items."
The video ends with a stern warning to the store owner, urging them to follow proper government regulations and maintain standards of hygiene, especially when handling food products. The viral footage has sparked widespread conversation online, with many users voicing concerns over food safety practices in local markets.
The KPDNs TikTok post serves as a reminder to both store owners and consumers about the importance of following food safety regulations to ensure public health.
