A 36-year-old local man was apprehended during a raid in Sandakan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 146 boxes of cooking oil and 300 litres of petrol to a neighboring country.
Sabah (Region 4) Marine Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Mohd Nazri Ibrahim reported that the operation, named Ops Taring Landai Khas Kontraban, took place at 9 pm on Sunday (Jan 12). Authorities also seized a three-tonne lorry and a four-wheel-drive vehicle during the raid.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Sandakan Marine Police Intelligence Unit inspected the vehicles parked along Kampung Pukat, Jalan Bokara. Upon inspection, they discovered 2,482 packets of one-kilogram cooking oil stored in boxes and petrol contained in ten-gallon bottles.
The estimated value of the seized goods, including the vehicles, amounted to RM146,717, Mohd Nazri said in a statement.
"The arrest was made under the Control of Supplies Act 1961. The suspect and the confiscated items were transported to the Sandakan marine police operation base for further action," he added.
The case has been handed over to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) office in Sandakan for further investigation.
