Kitchen is where we prepare the food. The houseplant placed in the kitchen should be safe and non-toxicity. It should not pollute our source of food and to be the factor for food poisoning cases. However,It does not mean the kitchen should not place any indoor plants, but we should be extra careful in selecting the suitable indoor plants to avoid the food poisoning case.
Non-toxicity Houseplant
It should not be an allergen and source of food poisoning. Some of the plants are toxic and it is not suitable to place in the place where our food is prepared. It is because sometimes the leaves of the plants may drop inside our foods and if we don't notice we will consume it accidently. Examples of the non-toxic plants are Areca palm, all the ferns species plants, bamboo palm, Chlorophytum comosum, Pilea cadierei, Dischidia, Fittonia, Maranta, Peperomia spp.
Leaves is Big Enough
Besides non-toxicity, the leaves of the houseplant should be big enough and it will not drop to the food preparation platform accidently. If the leaves are big enough, even though the plants are poisonous we may find the dropped leaves easily. For example, Aglaonema, Dieffenbachia, Epipremnum aureum, Ficus elastica and Ficus lyrata.
Culinary Herbs
Culinary herbs are another good choice to be the houseplant placed in the kitchen. However, many of the herb species belong to full sun plants. It should be exposed to direct sunlight for growing actively. Therefore, if you choose the culinary herbs to be houseplants, it may be placed in the basement of the window sill where it receives several hours of sunlight every day. Examples of the culinary herbs are Peppermint, Basil, Pandan and Curry leaves. It is convenient to use in cooking and to be the greenery corner in the kitchen at the same time.
You may think the best way to avoid food pollution is not placing any houseplants in the kitchen. However, placing houseplant in the kitchen may liven up the whole ambient in the kitchen. Besides that, plants could release phytoncide to remove the bad odour in the kitchen and keep the air quality of the kitchen in good quality. So, if we may take notice of the above principles, placing houseplant in the kitchen is safe and beneficial.
