Amza Haril, who has been practising law for 31 years, posted a video on TikTok, recounting an incident that took place in 1998. He witnessed a handcuffed Indian mother being arrested for stealing a complete set of pencil cases worth about RM18 from a supermarket.
The mother admitted to the theft, explaining that she had promised her son that if he achieved the top position in his exams, she would gift him a full set of pencil cases. However, unable to afford it, she resorted to committing the crime out of desperation.
She tearfully said, "I had no choice, I had no money, but I promised my son that if he came first in class, I would get him the whole set of pencil cases, so I had to steal."
After hearing the mother's story, the compassionate lawyer went to her son's school to verify the details. Upon checking the boy's report card and receiving confirmation from the principal and teachers, he was moved by the predicament faced by the mother and son. He decided to offer pro bono legal representation for the mother, who was eventually sentenced to a few years of probation.
Fast forward to 2017, while sitting in the courthouse cafeteria, the lawyer suddenly noticed a man seemingly observing him daily. One day, the man approached him and revealed that he was the boy who wanted the pencil case all those years ago.
As it turned out, the man was the son of the woman who stole the pencil case. He had grown up to become a lawyer! The lawyer expressed his deep emotion, stating that this incident remains one of the most unforgettable memories throughout his long career as a lawyer.
