Following the automated printing of a remark that appeared to insult Islam on a customer's receipt, Domino's Pizza Malaysia has filed a police report.
A representative from the pizza restaurant stated in a statement that it had also taken "appropriate" action against the offending staff member and customer.
The statement said, "We are extremely disappointed that a customer said something rude and hurtful when placing their order."
"We are also disappointed that one of our employees believed that the customer's personal information should be shared online."
Yesterday, an image of a receipt from a Penang Domino's Pizza went viral on social media, sparking an uproar.
A person with knowledge of the situation claims that the message originated from a customer's entry in the online order's "delivery instructions" section.
Bayan Lepas assemblyman Azrul Mahathir Aziz said he was briefed on the situation during a meeting with the branch supervisor and management of the pizza restaurant in Sungai Ara yesterday night.
He claimed that a lot of people, including himself, had assumed the cashier had created the receipt.
"The remarks section was misused by the provocateur, and the receipt that went viral was actually from an online order," he said on Facebook.
"I request the public to maintain calm and not get carried away by this provocation. The police have already started an inquiry. "Let the authorities handle it," he added.
According to Penang police, they had received a report of an act of provocation that insulted Islam.
The matter is being looked into under Section 298 of the Penal Code for comments spoken with the intentional purpose of offending religious sentiments and Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act for insulting comments intended to cause an uproar, according to Southwest Police Chief Kamarul Rizal Jenal.
