A prank with a fake pistol was captured on camera and went viral on social media yesterday. Now, three males, ages 23 to 26, have been taken into custody by police in relation to this hoax.
A team from the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) D9 branch of the district apprehended the guys at Matang, according to Kuching police commander ACP Ahsmon Bajah.
In a 13-second video posted on Telegram, a man is seen pointing what appears to be a pistol at another man who is in a car in Metrocity, Matang. These men have been detained on suspicion of being involved.
In a statement, ACP Ahsmon said, "After an investigation, all three suspects acknowledged being in the viral video and claimed it was just a joke."
“A replica pistol and a Perodua Axia car were also seized from the suspects.”
According to the authorities, one of the individuals is believed to have a violent criminal past.
To help with the investigation, all three suspects will be placed under remand today and the case will be tried under Section 36(1) of the Fire Arms Act 1960, which stipulates a maximum prison sentence of one year, or a fine of not more than RM5,000, or both.
Additionally, the case will also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which imposes fines of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to a year, or both, as well as additional fines of RM1,000 for each day the offense is committed after conviction.
