Thai authorities have apprehended two suspects linked to a cross-border shooting incident targeting a security checkpoint at the Malaysia-Thailand border in Padang Besar, Perlis. The arrest, which took place in Songkhla, Thailand, on December 13, involved two Thai nationals aged 21 and 28.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain revealed that the incident occurred on December 12, when Malaysian General Operations Force (PGA) officers were conducting routine patrols near the border checkpoint.
During the patrol, the officers heard multiple gunshots coming from the Thai side of the border. Moments later, they spotted two men riding a motorcycle near the checkpoint. Acting swiftly, the officers reported the situation, prompting reinforcement. Fortunately, the shooters fled the area before causing any harm, leaving the officers uninjured.
Investigations led by Malaysian police uncovered CCTV footage that captured the suspects' movements. The video shows the duo riding their motorcycle from a rubber plantation and stopping near the checkpoint. One of them was seen pulling out an automatic pistol and firing approximately 10 shots toward the Malaysian side.
The footage further revealed that the suspects collected their bullet casings before retreating back to the plantation.
Following a thorough investigation, Malaysian authorities shared critical information with their Thai counterparts, leading to the suspects arrest at a premises in Songkhla the next day.
According to Razarudin, the suspects admitted during questioning that they had borrowed the firearm from a friend and were firing shots to "test" the weapon. The gun was later returned to its owner, whom Thai police are now tracking for further investigation.
