Apparently, RM 50 is not good enough these days.
An anonymous confession on UTAR Confessions Official Facebook Page told a story of how s/he overheard a conversation between his/her younger cousins right after a zoom call. The cousins were apparently dissatisfied with the amount of red envelope money they had gotten which was given by the confessor‘s mother.
"I can't even buy skincare with this money!" one of the cousins was heard saying. This, of course, infuriated the confessor as s/he was rather perplexed by the lack of gratitude. "Income is rather scarce in these unprecedented times, some people can't even afford to eat proper meals!" the confessor continued.
The netizens in the comment section shared the exact sentiment.
"As I recalled, the Malaysian Chinese's Angpau was never that much. Getting RM 2, RM 5, RM 10 from relatives or friend's parents is considered normal, getting RM20 or RM50 you are considered really lucky." A user noted.
Another user wrote, "The kids nowadays...I only get RM5 or above, and I don't even complain." While another one said, "RM 50 is a lot, kids don't know how hard it is to earn a living nowadays."
This one particular user touched our heart. "Hi aunty, give me the RM 50 angpau instead, I'll be forever grateful. I rarely get RM50 angpau from my relatives, normally I only get RM 10 or RM 20. Those who’d give RM 50 are usually the ones I only meet every few years, and my relatives are not even giving any angpau during video calls, those kids should be feeling joyful for getting RM50 angpau instead of complaining."
Translation:
"I don't think the kids nowadays know the meaning of CNY other than receiving angpau, I guess they don't even understand the other things. Giving you an angpau is a blessing, you should be thankful for getting one, not complaining, just reject next time if you don't want it."
"If it is up to me, I'll just give them RM 1 next year. I'd be saying how it is still a blessing, and at the same time, telling them if they find RM 50 to be too little, then I'll save it up for myself, and you getting an RM 1 blessing is good enough."
"WTH, don't give 'em anymore angpau, save the money. Don't even know what's respect or how hard it is to earn money."
"Being a Gen Z myself, I'm already thinking how awkward it is to receive angpau at age 21, but these people are complaining that RM50 angpau money is too little?"
