A local man was arrested by police in Air Itam for using abusive language against a traffic officer after being issued a traffic summons on the Thean Teik Highway on Wednesday (Oct 2) night. The 25-year-old man, unhappy with receiving a summons for running a red light, verbally attacked the officer in a confrontation that has since gone viral on social media.
Acting Timur Laut District Police Chief, Superintendent Lee Swee Sake, confirmed the arrest, stating that the man was taken into custody at around 10:30 pm in Taman Terubong Jaya to aid the investigation into the incident.
A video circulating on WhatsApp shows the motorcyclist angrily berating the traffic police officer, using foul language after being fined for committing a traffic offense, Supt Lee said in a statement on Thursday (Oct 3) night. According to Harian Metro, the altercation reportedly took place around 6:45 pm on the Thean Teik Highway, shortly after the motorcyclist ran through a red light.
The officer involved in the altercation lodged a police report regarding the incident, leading to the subsequent arrest of the man. Supt Lee added that the suspect is now remanded for three days to facilitate the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code, which pertains to the use of words or gestures intended to insult a person's modesty, and under Section 14 of the Minor Offenses Act 1955. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be referred to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for consideration of charges.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of abiding by traffic regulations and maintaining respectful conduct during law enforcement encounters.
