A bus captain in Singapore has won the admiration of many after going above and beyond to return a lost backpack containing a significant sum of money to its rightful owner.
The heartwarming act of integrity was highlighted by SBS Transit on its Facebook page, detailing the selfless actions of Chen Long, a driver for Service 58, which operates between Bishan Interchange and Pasir Ris Interchange.
One evening, upon reaching the interchange, a passenger handed Chen a forgotten backpack. Without hesitation, he contacted the operations control centre to report the lost item. Coincidentally, the owner of the backpack had already filed a missing item report just 25 minutes earlier.
After finishing his shift, instead of heading home, Chen made a special trip to Bishan Interchange to ensure the backpack was safely returned. Upon inspection, interchange staff discovered that the bag contained over S$14,000 (approximately RM45,800) in cash. They promptly reached out to the owner, who arrived 30 minutes later, visibly relieved and grateful to reclaim her belongings.
The owner later revealed that the cash was meant to be deposited into a new bank account. Expressing her gratitude, she commended Chen for his honesty and wished him success in his career.
Reflecting on his good deed, Chen humbly shared his thoughts:
"I can only imagine how worried the passenger must have been, so I'm happy I could return it. It's about doing the right thing."
SBS Transit also lauded Chen's exemplary conduct, stating:
"Chen Long's dedication to doing what's right truly embodies our CARES culture in action, showcasing integrity, accountability, and outstanding service. Thank you, Chen Long, and a job well done!"
