Instagram has been killing it lately with its security features. Their latest security update is now aiming to restrict unwanted interaction from potential online abusers. Yay!
The social media platform's newest update now allows users to disable both DMs and comments from non-followers or those who have only been recently following them within the past week. Such limits will shield you from any negative interaction while still maintaining the freedom for you to interact with your familiar audience.
"Our research shows that a lot of negativity towards public figures comes from people who don't actually follow them, or who have only recently followed them, and who simply pile on at the moment," Instagram stated. Even if you're not a public figure, there is still a possibility of being harassed online.
How to activate this feature?
1. Go to settings
2. Click "Privacy"
3. Click "Limits" and turn it on
However, any potential hate messages won't exactly be deleted. Instead, they'll only be hidden unless you approve them. Meaning: you'll still be able to read them but you can always choose not to react to them. Not ideal, but we can't have everything.
