The viral video below, which has been circulating on social media for the past few days, claims that bananas imported to Malaysia from Somalia have been found to contain helicobacter worms, which are said to pose dangerous health complications. If you're reading this and you've recently bought bananas... do not panic.
The Malaysian Department of Agriculture has vehemently denied those allegations. According to the Director-General, Datuk Zahimi Hassan, the information accompanying the video has been found to be unauthentic and doubtful. He added that Helicobacter is a type of bacterium and not from a group of insects or caterpillars as mentioned.
"Until now, no complaints and reports on cases of helicobacter worm attacks on banana crops in Malaysia have been received by the department," he said in a statement today.
So, there you have it, folks. Our bananas are indeed safe to be consumed.
