Like the cherry blossom season in Japan, it is officially tecoma season in Penang with beautiful colours of the flowers, white, pink and even purple decorating treetops of the sidewalks, making it irresistible for a passerby to pass by without stopping for a photo.
According to the Penang Botanic Gardens research officer D. Thachayni, the sakura-like flower actually comes from the Tabebuia rosea species, which has white or purple flowers. These flowers would normally start blooming around February to April with the full bloom around March.
According to her, the Tecoma trees are actually triggered by the change in temperature. It normally blooms when it starts to rain after a long hot period.
