The proud medical team of Queen Elizabeth 2 Hospital and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) certainly have plenty to smile about.
The state recently recorded its first "awake craniotomy" procedure, which was performed successfully on a 50-year-old female patient with multiple meningiomas.
She remained conscious during the six-hour procedure, a decision deemed necessary as to improve her condition.
Among the personnels who worked tirelessly in historical feat included neurosurgeons Dr M. Sofan Zenian and Dr Hezry Abu Hasan (both HQE2), neurosurgical anaesthesiologist Dr Yeap Boon Tat (UMS) and senior neurosurgical consultant Dr Liew Boon Seng (Sungai Buloh Hospital).
