In an unexpected turn of events, MYAirline, a budget airline based in Malaysia, announced its suspension on the 12th, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at airports without any prior notice. Preliminary estimates indicate that the sudden halt in the company's operations will affect approximately 125,000 MYAirline passengers who have already purchased tickets.
A purported MYAirline employee took to the popular social media platform, Xiaohongshu, to expose the company's downfalling situation. The whistleblower revealed that they had sensed trouble within the company since September when employees began resigning one after another. Furthermore, some employees claimed they were facing issues related to delayed salary payments.
The employee explained that they hadn't initially considered leaving their job. However, they were approached by MYAirline's Human Resources department, which offered a significantly higher salary, leading them to switch to MYAirline. Screenshots of conversations between the employee and the company's HR department were shared, depicting the employee's persistent efforts to obtain their September salary. Expressing frustration, the employee questioned, "If you can't afford to pay wages, why did you hire me?" They emphasized that they were not there to work for free. Despite their appeals, the HR department responded that they were waiting for instructions from the management too.
Additionally, the employee disclosed that they had only received one month's salary since they joined in late July.
The whistleblower also revealed that since September, numerous employees had resigned, and they had come across news reports about MYAirline's director and largest shareholder, Datuk Allan Goh, being fined RM50 million by the national bank. The employee mentioned that some colleagues had filed complaints with the labour department, but no investigations into the company had been initiated thus far. They emphasized that apart from their own one-month salary delay, some employees were in even worse situations, enduring delays of two to three months' worth of salaries and six months' unpaid provident fund contributions.
Another MYAirline employee shared their plight on Xiaohongshu, confirming that the company had withheld employees' salaries and provident fund contributions for several months. They described their personal experience of going without income for two months and revealed that provident fund payments had been outstanding for six months. The employee pointed out that their colleagues, including pilots, were facing similar circumstances.
