A heartbreaking tragedy occurred in Alor Setar, when a 2yo girl Nur Aisha Misya Afifah Abdul Fattah drowned in a drain near her home at Lorong Seri, Jalan Langgar, after flash floods hit the area.
Her grandfather, Mohd Hamidan Hashim, 38, said he initially thought he saw a doll floating in the water, only to realize it was his granddaughter. "I pulled her out and kept calling her name, but she didnt respond. Her face was pale, and her lips were blue," he recalled.
Hamidan, who was working near Darulaman Stadium at the time, rushed home after his eldest daughter, Siti Nurfarhana Abdullah, 18, called to tell him Nur Aisha had gone missing. Suspecting she had fallen into the drain, Hamidan, along with local villagers, searched frantically. However, the water level, swollen from an overflowing Sungai Kedah and high tides, made the search difficult.
Villagers dived into the deep waters, but it wasn't until around 8pm that Nur Aisha's body surfaced.
He noted that the area had never experienced such flooding before, but a combination of factors had caused the flash flood that submerged the drain.
Meanwhile, Siti Nurfarhana said she had been resting inside the house, around 30 meters from the drain, when her daughter disappeared. At first she thought Nur Aisha had gone to her grandmothers house nearby. Feeling uneasy, she began searching for her, only to be informed by a villager that her daughter had fallen into the drain.
