A 19-year-old female teenager has been arrested in connection with the discovery of a newborn baby boy abandoned in a shopping complex toilet on Thursday.
Johor Baru (North) district police chief Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh confirmed the arrest, stating that the teenager was apprehended in Tampoi at 8.45 pm, just hours after the baby was found.
The case came to light when a cleaner at the shopping complex discovered the infant in the toilet.
"The cleaner found the baby boy with his umbilical cord still attached, and his body covered in blood," Balveer said in a statement.
The newborn was immediately sent to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for medical checks and treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
Balveer added that the authorities are actively searching for a local man to assist with the investigation into the case.
The incident is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code, which pertains to the concealment of birth with the intention of abandoning the child.
The police have urged anyone with information about the case to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
