For Malaysians living abroad, the craving for home-cooked dishes can hit hard. That was the case for former HITZ FM Morning Crew presenter Arnold Loh, who now resides in Japan. Taking to his TikTok page, he shared his discovery of a Malaysian restaurant in Shibuya, Tokyo, that brought him a taste of home.
@arnoldloh Finally found real #Malaysian food in #tokyo with a very extensive menu that includes some Malaysian favourites. To manage expectations, 3 dishes cost us about RM160.00 / 5,400 Yen. In his post, Arnold expressed his nostalgia with the caption, "The stomach wants what it wants," highlighting his longing for authentic Malaysian flavors. The video takes viewers into Malay Asian Cuisine, a cozy eatery adorned with Malaysian flags and posters showcasing the beauty of Sabah and Sarawak.
The restaurant's menu boasts a variety of beloved Malaysian dishes, making it a haven for anyone seeking comfort food from home. From nasi lemak and char kuey teow to sambal fried rice, curry chicken with white rice, mee goreng, and even ikan goreng tiga rasa, the selection is enough to make any Malaysian food lover's mouth water.
Arnold didn't hold back on his food review. "To be very honest, the char kuey teow was the best. Enough wok hey, very tasty. The nasi lemak boleh tahan. But the prawn mee, ah memang tak payah la," he remarked, giving his honest verdict on the dishes he tried.
Malay Asian Cuisine isn't just popular among regular patrons it has also welcomed several prominent Malaysians. Among them are former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, Minister of Economic Affairs Rafizi Ramli, and even the famous Malaysian comedy group Sepahtu.
Aside from serving hot meals, the restaurant also has a mini kedai runcit corner selling Malaysian food products such as Ayam Brand Kaya Jam and Brahims Kuah Masak Lemak. For Malaysians missing their favorite local ingredients, this spot is a great place to stock up on some essentials.
However, enjoying a meal here does come at a cost. Arnold revealed that he spent RM160 on three dishes for two people. While that may be on the pricey side, the nostalgia and comfort of home-cooked flavors make it worth the splurge every once in a while.
