A Netflix original series involving people in jumpsuits and masks, guns, and lots of money have been spreading like wildfire lately. No, I'm not talking about Money Heist (#ForTokyo), but the latest Korean masterpiece - "Squid Game".
In this show, 456 players are subjected to a series of children games that have been taken to the next level because when you lose, you literally die. Since it's release on 17/9, "Squid Game" has been consistently taking up a spot in the top 10 all over the world.
Although the premise is simple enough - play red light green light, tug of war, and marbles to stand a chance to win 456 billion Korean Won or die, the show has managed to incite all sorts of emotions among viewers. Many even claim that the show reflects the ugly truth about our society and that it's too real.
There are only 9 episodes in the first and only season currently and those who have finished it are already asking for more! There isn't any news on whether there will be a season 2, but here are some unanswered questions that suggest we will get it!
(There are some spoilers ahead, so read at your own risk!)
#1 - "Squid Game" Employees
We know how the players of squid games came about, but another interesting group of people are the employees of the game. These people in red jumpsuits are assigned 3 types of masks, bearing a circle, triangle, and square, in ascending levels of "seniority". But how did they get the job? Were they previous players? Were they forced to work here?
#2 - 20 Players that Didn't Return
Before the games started, all players signed an agreement which included a clause for them to stop the game based on majority. After they got a taste of the cruel first game - red light green light, they decided to stop the game and forfeit the money. However, most of the players eventually decided to come back, except for 20. The "Front Man" ordered the employees to keep track of these 20 players, but we don't hear about them since. So, are they coming back for the next season?
#3 - Is Hero Cop Jun-Ho Still Alive?
After realizing that his brother received the same invitation to the game, Jun-Ho managed to sneak into the game as employee 29. After securing information, he escaped to an island but was eventually surrounded by the "Front Man" and other employees. The "Front Man" revealed himself to be Jun-Ho's missing brother and shot the cop, causing him to fall into the ocean. However, the shot seemed to be intentionally aimed at the shoulder, perhaps giving him a chance to live?
#4 - Star Actors & Their Mysterious Roles
The main character got into the "Squid Game" by first playing a traditional Korean game "ddakji" with a mysterious character in a suit. That character was played by none other than Gong Yoo, which still left us curious as to what's the character's role, how much power does that character has, and will Gong Yoo return in season 2?
Another star actor is the man behind the masked leader - Lee Byung-hun. We've gotten to know that this guy in charge of the entire operation was actually a past winner. How did he end up controlling the game is another mystery.
#5 - Player 456 Returning
After winning all that money, the guilt that the main character, Gi-hun had was so overwhelming that he did not spend any of it. A year after leaving, while getting ready to fly to the US to see his daughter, he caught a glimpse of Gong Yoo's mysterious character playing "ddakji" with another potential "Squid Game" player.
He eventually stole the new name card from the player and called the number. The "Front Man" advised him to board the plane (suggesting that they are watching him), but he turned back in the end. Will he try to take his revenge on "Squid Game"? Will he end up being in charge?
#6 - Is There More Than 1 Boss?
A really big surprise was when we found out that the person who started this and was funding the entire operation was the old man, known as "Player 1". After revealing his role to Gi-hun and explaining how he thought there was no more kindness in the world, he passed away. However, we see the "Front Man" still carrying on with the game. So, could there be another boss?
There really are so many unanswered questions just dying to be revealed, and viewers are desperately wanting a second season. It is also SO Netflix to be leaving shows so open-ended. If you haven't watch the first season, you really oughta do it now!
