The Fisheries Department is urging the public to stop spreading and believing the false claims regarding the tilapia fish.

The viral poster which circulated on WhatsApp alleged that the species contain cancerous properties and are way hazardous than that of bacon or hamburger.

The Department has since released a statement to refute the narrative:

"According to what is stated in the poster, it is claimed that tilapia are unsafe to eat and can cause cancer. Genetically modified corn and soya have been used to reduce the use of fish meal and this has been approved by the authorities in Norway and the European Union."

All in all, identifying the credibility of any news is certainly important as not all sources are legit.

What say you?
