In an unusual move to instill discipline, a mother in Malaysia took her young son to the police station after discovering that he had been consistently lying about completing his schoolwork. Nor Syuhada Mohd Zahri, the concerned mother, decided that a firm lesson was necessary when she learned from his teacher that her 11-year-old son had been neglecting his assignments.
Nor Syuhada explained to Sinar Harian that her son often reassured her that he had finished his homework at school. Trusting his words, she was taken aback when his teacher disclosed that he hadn't been doing his assignments at all. Realizing the issue had become habitual, she chose an unconventional approach to get through to him.
"When the teacher told me, I was in shock," she recalled. "At home, he kept insisting he'd done his work at school. I didn't want to argue endlessly, so I brought him to the nearest police station to give him a little scare."
The officers at the station quickly understood the mother's intention and were willing to help drive home the lesson. Playing along, they staged a stern "detention" for the boy, pretending to reprimand him and even threatening him with a glimpse of a holding cell should he repeat his actions.
"The officer asked him a lot of questions, giving him a proper interrogation to make him understand the seriousness of his actions," she said. "They even showed him handcuffs and took him to the police car. But the turning point was when they showed him the holding cell that's when he truly grasped the gravity of it all and began crying and apologizing."
Since the visit, Nor Syuhada has observed a positive shift in her son's behavior. He now completes his assignments diligently and respects the importance of honesty. Grateful to the officers for their cooperation, she expressed appreciation for their role in teaching her son this valuable lesson. Her son, too, has promised not to make the same mistake again, a pledge his mother hopes he'll keep as he continues his schooling journey.
