The Smurfs are making a big comeback! Paramount Pictures has dropped the first full trailer for its upcoming animated musical Smurfs, featuring none other than Rihanna as the voice of Smurfette.
In addition to voicing the beloved character, Rihanna is also producing the film and has created original songs for the soundtrack. "I tried to get the Papa Smurf role, but it didn't work out," she joked back in 2023 at CinemaCon, teasing the project.
The film, directed by Chris Miller and Matt Landon, delves into themes of identity within the Smurf world. Written by Pam Brady, the movie boasts an all-star voice cast, including Natasha Lyonne, Nick Offerman, Amy Sedaris, Nick Kroll, Daniel Levy, Octavia Spencer, Sandra Oh, and many more.
Unlike the previous live-action/CG hybrid Smurfs films from Sony Pictures, this new version sticks to its animated roots while reimagining the magical world originally created by Belgian artist Peyo. The filmmakers drew inspiration from the classic comics, aiming to expand the Smurfs lore while staying true to its original charm.
Fans can experience this fresh take on the beloved blue creatures when Smurfs hits theaters on July 18.
