Did you know that there are over 5000 euphemisms used to describe being on your period, and bring on your period is one of them?
Why so many terms for one simple, natural process? In the past, menstruation was considered as an impurity and in some countries, women would be separated and sent away during their menstruation period.
I guess, the way the world treated a person who is going through their menstrual period made women want to hide it and be ashamed of it.
In reality, it isn’t something to be ashamed of. It is something unavoidable and getting it is actually a good sign. IT shows that your reproductive system is working. So hello, what’s so bad bout that?
Anyway, on the brighter side, over the years, people have come up with creative ways of saying that they are on their period. Here are some of the euphemisms used for it all around the world:
1. Red Army
+ Used by the Russians and Germans
+ Refers to the army of Soviet Russia or the Soviet Union
2. The painters are in
+ Used by the English
+ Refers to you know, red paint coming out of you LOL
3. Granny’s stuck in traffic / Granny’s coming in a red car
+ Used in South Africe
+ No idea why granny being stuck in traffic is related to menstruation but ok
4. Strawberry Week
+ Used in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Latvia, Norway, and Switzerland
+ Maybe because of the colour, at least it sounds like something sweet
5. There are communists in the funhouse
+ Used in Denmark, Estonia, Canada, and Sweden
+ Could be because of all the blood, and you know, everything that went down in the past
6. The motherland is bleeding
+ Used in Turkey
+ Because you are the motherland, and you know, you’re bleeding
7. Shark Week
+ Used in Canada, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, the UK, and the US
+ If you don’t know why it’s called this, then just watch a shark eat on Youtube, you’ll understand
8. Surfing the Crimson Wave
+ Used in in Australia and New Zealand
+ Because surfing is quite a famous sport in those countries
