Some Malaysians woke up today and found out they were registered as People‘s Volunteer Corps or better known as RELAs, without their consent or knowledge.
When the matter was brought up to Facebook, RELA representative stated that there was a mass membership campaign back in 2012 that may have caused it. They also informed those who wish to withdraw their membership can do so by coming forth to the department with necessary details.
However, some M'sians discovered they were registered even a few years before the year mentioned. Among the "victim" was Steven Sim, the Bukit Mertajam MP.
Other Twitter users have also just discovered their RELA membership, and they've got some questions that need answers.
After the fiasco, the RELA's official website seems to not be working.
This begs the question: was there a privacy breach, and why did the RELA organization obtain so many citizens' private information without informing the individuals involved?
